Per Title 46 (Militia and Military Affairs), Chapter 9 (Emergency Medical Services Act) of Idaho code, the Time-Sensitive Emergency Registry is responsible for curating the data required to analyze the incidence, severity, causes, costs, and outcomes of traumatic injury, stroke, and ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in Idaho. TSE Registry trauma data describe the nature and scope of traumatic injury, severity of injury, performance of out-of-hospital and hospital emergency medical systems, and patient outcomes for Idaho residents and non-Idaho residents treated for a traumatic injury at an Idaho acute care facility.The Idaho Military Division Idaho Bureau of Emergency Medical Services contracts with, and provides funding to, the Idaho Hospital Association (IHA) to maintain a statewide trauma registry.

Age-Adjusted Rates:Age-adjusted incidence rates show on the maps and tables were calculated using the direct method of standardization and standardized to the age distribution of the 2000 U.S. population. Incidence rates represent the average number of traumatic injuries annually per 100,000 persons. Age adjustment allows rates from one geographic area of time period to be compared with rates from other geographic areas or time periods that may have differences in age distributions. Any observed differences in age-adjusted incidence rates between populations are not due to differing age structures.Confidence Intervals:Confidence intervals, which are estimated from available data, provide a range of values that are likely to include the true and unknown population value. The width of a confidence interval is a measure of variability, with wider confidence intervals connoting less reliable estimates. The charts included display confidence intervals around county-specific rate estimates.Classification of Injury Mechanism and Intent:Injury mechanism is typically thought of as the “how” of injury, e.g., firearm, motor vehicle accident, fall, etc. Injury intent can be thought of as the way a person was injured or died, i.e., unintentionally, intentionally (homicide/assault, suicide/self-harm) or undetermined. Injury mechanism and injury intent as shown on this dashboard are classified based on the ICD-10-CM external cause of injury code. For non-fatal injuries, external cause codes are classified as described in the “Proposed framework for presenting injury data using the International Classification of Disease, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) diagnosis codes.” Fatal injuries are classified as described in the “The ICD-10 injury mortality diagnosis matric” based on ICD-10 mortality codes.Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria:For inclusion/exclusion criteria, please visit the TSE Data Dictionary for more information. What are the limitations of the Idaho Time Sensitive Emergency Registry data?

Data in this dashboard based on injury location use numerator data that includes Idaho residents and non-residents in conjunction with denominator data that only represent Idaho residents. Thus, the rates for a given county may be artificially high (in particular when comparing these data to other counties) in areas where there are large numbers of non-Idaho residents experiencing traumatic injury, e.g., state boarder communities and counties, counties with relatively large number of tourists. These rates may be particularly inflated in areas with relatively small resident populations. For all these reasons, rates of injury based on injury location should be interpreted with prudence.These data are, however, being presented as rates of injury based on location as they provide some insight as to the burden of injury that first responders and local hospitals may experience with respect to treating traumatic injury, they may also be hypothesis generating with respect to public health intervention in a particular county.
