Suicide is a serious public health problem that can have lasting harmful effects on individuals, families, and communities. Because it can happen to anyone at almost any age and may not be preceded by a behavioral or mental health condition, it is in everyone's interest to become informed. There are many factors that contribute to suicide. The goal of suicide prevention is to reduce factors that contribute to risk and increase factors that promote resilience. For more information on the Suicide Prevention Program, please visit their website About Suicide Prevention | Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.

Known CircumstancesReasons why circumstances may be unknown vary. For example, circumstances may be unavailable because the investigating agencies chose not to share information or the investigating agency was unable to determine the circumstances surrounding the death. Consequently, counting all cases in an analysis (including those with unknown circumstances) will result in underreporting of circumstance percentages as the denominator will include deaths with unknown circumstances. The vast majority of suicides have circumstances, but a smaller proportion of homicides have circumstances. Circumstance variables are endorsed only if the circumstance is present. If a circumstance is not endorsed by the state data abstractor, this does not mean that the circumstance was not present. It means that state data abstractors cannot make assumptions about circumstances beyond those indicated in the required source documents (i.e., law enforcement report or coroner/medical examiner report). Therefore, results and findings should be evaluated cautiously. Circumstances of Suicide and Homicide'A Crisis Precipitated Death' - The following definition of 'crisis' from the NVDRS coding manual is used to define a crisis circumstance precipitating death. The crisis variable is important to identify deaths that appear to involve an element of impulsivity and be related to a crisis. A “Crisis” is a current/acute event (within 2 weeks of death) that is indicated in one of the source reports to have contributed to the death. Inclusion in the source document and indication that the event occurred within two weeks of the death is sufficient to code a circumstance as a crisis. Direct language that the event caused or contributed to the death is not required to code “Yes.” A crisis can precede the death (e.g., had a bad argument the day before the incident, divorce papers served that day, or victim laid off the week before) or be an impending event (e.g., house was to be foreclosed on the day after the incident or court date for a criminal offense three days after the suicide).

Circumstances are not known or available for all cases, which may be due to sparse or preliminary reporting in the source documents.Toxicology testing is not performed on all decedents, and testing practices may vary by state.Mental and physical health variables are often based on reporting of people who knew the victim, rather than health care professionals or official medical records. Some variables have high levels of missing data.More information about NVDRS, including additional analytic resources can be found here: https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/datasources/nvdrs/resources.html
The National Syndromic Surveillance Program (NSSP) is a collaboration among CDC, federal partners, local and state health departments, and academic and private sector partners who have formed a Community of Practice. They collect, analyze, and share electronic patient encounter data received from emergency departments, urgent and ambulatory care centers, inpatient healthcare settings, and laboratories. The electronic health data are integrated through a shared platform—the BioSense Platform also known as ESSENCE. The public health community uses analytic tools on the platform to analyze data received as early as 24 hours after a patient’s visit to a participating facility. Public health officials use these timely and actionable data to detect, characterize, monitor, and respond to events of public health concern. The number of Idaho facilities reporting emergency department data to ESSENCE is 67 total, 43 emergency departments and 24 urgent care centers. The 43 emergency department facilities currently reporting represent 97.7% of estimated emergency department annual visits in Idaho. Therefore, the number of visits is not 100% comparable and should be taken into consideration when comparing data across timeframes. For more information visit: https://www.cdc.gov/nssp/index.html. For questions about the ESSENCE query run for this dashboard, please visit the Technical Notes page. For further questions about ESSENCE, please reach out to the Division of Public Health (DPHInquiries@dhw.idaho.gov).
