This dashboard contains data about live births to Idaho Residents, regardless of where the event occurred. A live birth is defined as a birth that shows any sign of life after delivery. Statistics are provided for total births, demographic data, medical and health data, and natality rates. Some statistics are only provided at the state level, whereas other statistics are also provided for specific public health districts (PHDs) and counties. Additional PHD and county level data are available upon request. Data are published from the last five years for which finalized birth records are available. Data from previous years are available upon request.

This dashboard does not contain data about births which occurred in Idaho to non-Idaho residents. It also does not include data about stillbirths, induced abortions, miscarriages, or pregnancies. Data about miscarriages and, beginning in 2022, about induced abortion and pregnancies are not available due to limitations in the availability of these data to the Idaho Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics. Data about stillbirths and births occurring in Idaho, as well as data about induced abortion and pregnancies from before 2022, are available upon request.

Where does data from the Idaho Births dashboard come from?

The data presented in this dashboard are generated when a baby is born and a certificate of live birth is registered. As part of the Idaho vital records program, data from each birth certificate are validated and entered into a database of birth records before being analyzed and published to this dashboard. The Idaho Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics (BVRHS) manages all steps of this process. This includes inspecting each Idaho state record for promptness of filing, completeness, and accuracy of information; querying for missing or inconsistent information; numbering the records; preparing indexes; processing the records; issuing certified copies; storing the documents for permanent reference and safekeeping; and providing health statistics and analysis.

What are the requirements for registering live birth records in Idaho?

Registration of births is a legal requirement. Most certificates of births occurring at Idaho hospitals are filed electronically. Beginning in 2016, all 50 states and Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, and the United States Virgin Islands used the 2003 U.S. Standard Certificate of Live Birth for state issued certificates [1]. In addition, states can - and Idaho does - collect additional certificate items not on the 2003 U.S. Standard. There is an agreement among all registration areas in the U.S. for resident exchange of copies of birth certificates. References1.
